30 Hidden iPhone Features Most Users Never Find
Keyboard and Input
The iPhone keyboard hides a scientific calculator mode (rotate to landscape in the calculator app), a trackpad mode (press and hold the space bar), and a one-handed typing mode (press and hold the globe icon). The text-replacement feature in Settings → General → Keyboard lets you create shortcuts that expand to email addresses, phone numbers, or any other frequently typed string. Most users never configure either.
Back Tap Shortcuts
Back Tap is the most useful accessibility feature that nobody uses. Go to Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap, and you can trigger screenshots, lock screen, launch an app, or run a Shortcut by double- or triple-tapping the back of your phone. Combined with the Shortcuts app, this gives you two reassignable hardware buttons on any iPhone with Face ID.
Focus Modes and Filters
Focus modes filter notifications by context — work, personal, sleep, driving — but most users stop at the default presets. Create a custom Focus mode in Settings → Focus that hides specific home screens, allows only calls from specific contacts, and dims the lock screen during scheduled hours. Pair it with a Focus Filter that hides personal email accounts during work Focus and you have a genuine separation of contexts.
Medical ID and Emergency
The Medical ID feature in the Health app shows your medical conditions, medications, and emergency contacts on the lock screen without requiring passcode entry. First responders know to look for it. It takes five minutes to fill out, is free, and has saved lives. Settings → Health → Medical ID is the path.
Scanner Hidden in Notes
The Notes app includes a production-quality document scanner. Tap the camera icon inside any note and select Scan Documents. The scanner automatically detects edges, corrects perspective, and outputs a searchable PDF. It replaces most standalone scanner apps and does not require a subscription. The same scanner is available from the Files app when you save to iCloud.
Battery Health and Charge Management
Settings → Battery → Battery Health shows your battery's maximum capacity as a percentage and flags when the battery has degraded enough to affect performance. Enable Optimized Battery Charging on the same screen to have the iPhone learn your charging schedule and hold at 80% overnight, extending battery life significantly. The Battery Usage by App list also shows which apps are draining your battery in the background.
AirDrop and Nearby Share
AirDrop has more permission states than most users realize: Off, Contacts Only, and Everyone for 10 Minutes. The 10-minute window was added specifically to prevent AirDrop spam in public places while still allowing brief exchanges. Use it in Control Center rather than digging through settings. Files transferred via AirDrop do not compress; full-resolution photos and videos arrive intact.
Live Text and Visual Lookup
iOS 15 and later can extract text from any photo or live camera view. Long-press on text in a photo or point the camera at any printed text and tap the text indicator that appears. The extracted text is selectable, copyable, and translatable into dozens of languages. Visual Lookup goes further — point at a plant, landmark, or product and iOS will identify it. Both features are free and do not require third-party apps.
